CK Akonnor denies receiving $100,000 from Sports Minister

Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has denied receiving $100,000 after being fired by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif.

Akonnor left the Black Stars in September 2021 after a string of poor performances that jeopardised Ghana’s World Cup qualification aspirations.

He was succeeded by Serbian strategist Milovan Rajevac, who returned to the squad following a successful stint that saw Ghana reach the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.

Following Akonnor’s resignation two years ago, there were reports that a combined arrears of seven months owed to the former Asante Kotoko coach, which the Sports Minister confirmed last week.

The minister, on the other hand, indicated that $100,000 was paid to both Akonnor and Rajevac, followed by a pledge to settle their arrears.

”Both CK and Milovan, once their contracts were terminated, we sat with them and negotiated their exit and C.K. was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation, same as Milovan.

”We still owe both of them and we have a payment schedule which I admit we have not followed because of constraint of funds. As and when we get funds we will pay the two coaches,” Ussif stated at a press briefing last week.

Contrary to the alleged amount paid, Akonnor says he never received the said amount adding that his agreement with the football association was not followed.

”I never received the kind of money the minister mentioned. I don’t want to put out how much they paid me but it was not $100,000 as the minister said,” Akonnor told Graphic Sports.

”My contract is still with the FA and if he likes he can go and check the agreement we had and see before making the claim and he will know that he is wrong,” he added.
