Lawyers representing Assin North Member of Parliament James Gyakye Quayson have charged K.T. Hammond with contempt of court.

The attorneys claim in the writ filed on Monday, July 10, that the Trade Minister made “irresponsible prejudicial comments” about the criminal case against the Assin North MP.

“That in an interview on Oyerepa TV on July 4, 2023, the Respondent categorically declared the accused person guilty of the charges for which he is on trial in this court, and the Respondent went on to state that the Accused/Applicant will go to prison.”

“That by the words of the Respondent which have been widely publicised nationally and internationally, the Respondent is violating the right of the Accused/Applicant to be presumed innocent as well as the right of the accused to a fair trial.

“That the said words of the Respondent are also in contempt of this Honourable Court as they are extremely prejudicial to the lawful process of this Honourable Court.”

Mr Quayson, the MP for Assin North, is being prosecuted for forgery and perjury after being accused by the Attorney-General’s Office.

He is also accused of manipulating a public officer and making a false declaration when he submitted nominations to run in the 2020 election despite not having relinquished his Canadian citizenship.

He has, however, filed a move on notice with the High Court seeking a stay of proceedings pending an appeal.

However, Mr Hammond is believed to have stated that his colleague will be found guilty and imprisoned.
