President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has explained why he chose Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate, a move that has significantly impacted the country’s political environment.
Dr. Bawumia was chosen for his remarkable attributes of sincerity, goal orientation, and unshakable dedication to attaining group objectives, according to Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo also emphasised the need for regional balance and unity in Ghana’s government, saying, “In terms of balance, individuals from the south, people from the north…I believe it is important for the country’s unity to have a leadership that includes Northerners and Southerners so that the country may remain unified.”
The President delivered the remarks on October 26 during a visit to Ghana’s presidential residence, Jubilee House, by students and instructors from the Association International School.
Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo praised Dr Bawumia for his honesty and direct communication style, stating that he prefers people who communicate openly.
“He [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] is an honest person,” he said. He is straightforward with you. He’s not one of those guys who makes you guess what they’re trying to convey; instead, he says what he has to express directly.”
Dr. Bawumia’s selection as President Akufo-Addo’s running mate originally sparked issues and worries inside the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and among political analysts, as he was not a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics then.
Nonetheless, Akufo-Addo stuck by his choice, and they ran together in the 2008 and 2012 elections, barely losing to the NDC led by John Evans Atta Mills and John Mahama, respectively.
The Akufo-Addo-Bawumia ticket won in 2016 and 2020, respectively, and they have since served as President and Vice President for six years and ten months.
