The Special Prosecutor’s office has been overwhelmed with complaints seeking an early inquiry into a large quantity of money taken from the properties of former Minister of Sanitation, Madam Cecilia Dapaah.
According to reliable sources, over 200 reports have been received by notable persons expressing worries about the source of the stolen cash, which was reportedly taken by the former Minister’s two home helpers.
On Saturday, July 22, 2023, Madam Cecilia Dapaah announced her resignation. Her resignation came when it was revealed that her housekeepers had reportedly taken large sums of both international and local currency from her Accra apartment. The act sent shockwaves throughout the country, as many were stunned by the daring crime.
At the moment, two housekeepers, Patience Botwe, 18, and Sarah Agyei, 30, are facing charges in an Accra Circuit Court for their role in the heist. They are accused of stealing $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis from Madam Dapaah’s mansion in Abelenkpe, Accra, between July and October 2022.
The OSP has not yet stated if it would launch an inquiry into the incident; nevertheless, the OSP does not often require a formal complaint or petition to launch an investigation into suspected corruption instances.
Some Ghanaians have also gone to social media to urge the Special Prosecutor to speed up the probe into the origins of the stolen monies.
Many Ghanaians are still waiting for answers, since Madam Dapaah has yet to offer a convincing explanation for the origin of the funds stolen from her house and split with her husband.
