Police in the Eastern Region are looking for Danso, a youth leader and miner in the Atewa East District, for allegedly killing Major Patrick Don-Chebe, the Commanding Officer of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners Taskforce.
According to Citi News sources, Danso and his accomplice, Joe, also a miner, went to a mining site around Asamang Tamfoe on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, where the task force acting on intelligence had gone to clamp down on illegal miners operating in the area, ostensibly to prevent the suspects from being taken into custody.
Danso and Joe arrived at the scene, with Joe openly armed and approaching the task force, but members of the task force who overpowered and disarmed him were caught off guard when Danso drew a handgun concealed beneath his shirt and shot Patrick Don-Chebe in the ribcage at close range.
Danso and Joe, on the other hand, were able to depart the scene while members of the task force rushed to assist their commander.
Patrick Don-Chebe was sent to the government hospital in Kibi for treatment. Medical officials caring to him rapidly referred him in an ambulance to the 37 military hospital, where he was immediately operated on.
Police in the neighbourhood who were alerted to the occurrence were able to apprehend Joe, leaving suspect Danso on the run.
Godwin Armah, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, verified the occurrence to Citi News and urged the Inspector General of Police, George Akufo-Dampare, and local police to expedite their investigations in order to apprehend the culprit.
Patrick Don-Chebe, the Taskforce’s Commanding Officer, remains hospitalised in the 37 Military Hospital.
