The Black Meteors were eliminated from the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations after a lacklustre performance against Guinea in their last group game on Friday night in Tangier.
The Meteors, who showed little spirit, were eliminated from the competition after four points out of a potential nine.
Ibrahim Tanko’s team needed a win over Guinea to beat their opponents into the knockout phase, but they fell short.
Despite their terrible performance on the night, the Meteors got off to a promising start, with Emmanuel Yeboah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku combining well to give Ghana the lead.
Emmanuel Yeboah was sent through on goal by some lovely interplay, and he converted clinically against the flow of play to give Ghana the lead.
Despite being second best for much of the first half, the Meteors hung on to their 1-0 advantage at the intermission.
After the half, the energetic Guinean side displayed persistence and were rewarded with a 30-yard shot from Ibrahima Breze Fofana.
Guinea hung on and, despite a late surge from Ghana, secured the point that advanced them to the knockout phase.
After the final whistle, the Black Meteors players collapsed to the ground in despair, their hopes of competing in the Olympics for the first time since 2004 dashed.
