Pay-per-view sales were estimated to top $180 million at the time. Floyd was to receive $25 million upfront and an additional $20-25 million in backend payments from the $180 million. Unfortunately, Mayweather and Pacquiao were unable to strike a deal, and the match was postponed for several years. Net Worth
Floyd Mayweather is a world-renowned boxing champion and promoter from the United States. Floyd Mayweather has an estimated net worth of $400 million. That makes him the wealthiest boxer in history. As of this writing, Floyd’s total career earnings exceed $1.1 billion.
Floyd is the fifth highest-paid athlete in history and one of only six sportsmen whose lifetime earnings have surpassed $1 billion. Michael Schumacher ($1 billion), Jack Nicklaus ($1.15 billion), Arnold Palmer ($1.35 billion), Tiger Woods ($1.65 billion), and Michael Jordan ($1.9 billion) are the other five. What’s arguably most amazing about Floyd’s earnings is that he managed to become the sixth highest-paid athlete in history while having nothing in the way of endorsement money. In comparison, the great majority of the highest-paid athletes in history made the vast bulk of their money via endorsement deals. Floyd made more than $500 million from only two fights. In 2015, he earned $250 million after defeating Manny Pacquiao. In 2017, he won $300 million by fighting Conor McGregor.
Floyd famously gave up his bank account balance to an ESPN reporter in 2013, right before his fight against Saul Alvarez. Floyd proudly exhibited his $123 million checking account balance.
Floyd was routinely (and by far) the most-paid athlete in the world throughout his prime boxing years. Despite having few endorsement deals, Floyd may easily earn $150 million to $300 million per year when he fights. Floyd made a mind-boggling $300 million between June 2014 and June 2015. Between June 2017 and June 2018, Floyd earned a total of $300 million, the majority of which came from his bout against Conor McGregor in August 2017. Floyd routinely earns $10 million per year from endorsements and other interests outside of the ring.
Floyd Mayweather has an estimated net worth of $450 million. He has made more than $1.1 billion in his career as of this writing. In May 2015, he earned $250 million by defeating Manny Pacquiao. Floyd won $300 million facing Conor McGregor in August 2017.
Financial Problems
Floyd has skirted claims of financial issues over the years. For example, in March 2017, the IRS sent Floyd a demand for $22.2 million in past taxes owed on his 2015 earnings. To be more explicit, the IRS said he owed $22,238,255. If that wasn’t insane enough, Floyd claimed he didn’t have enough liquid cash to pay off the loan. A few months later, Floyd’s attorney filed documentation guaranteeing the IRS that their amount would be paid in full, including interest and penalties, straight from the proceeds of his Conor McGregor bout. The IRS sought immediate payment, to which Floyd’s legal team responded:
“Although the taxpayer has substantial assets, those assets are restricted and primarily illiquid. The taxpayer has a significant liquidity event scheduled in about 60 days from which he intends to pay the balance of the 2015 tax liability due and outstanding.”
Floyd’s former buddy and now bitter opponent, 50 Cent, came to social media in February 2020 to declare that Floyd was broke and would need to return to the ring soon to replenish his coffers. These were unfounded assertions that Floyd quickly refuted on social media. However, it must be said that Floyd’s lifestyle is quite expensive to maintain. Between the residences, vehicles, jets, entourage, and other expenses, he undoubtedly spends tens of millions of dollars each year, despite the fact that he no longer has a steady source of income.
He never wears the same pair of shoes twice and leaves all of his discards for admirers, housekeepers, and hotel personnel. He travels with a 20-person entourage that includes buddies, family members, bodyguards, a barber (despite the fact that his head is shaved), and a massage therapist who happens to be a stunning female. Once, thieves stormed into his home and stole $7 million in jewellery…And we haven’t even gotten started on Floyd’s gambling habits. It’s hard to say how much money Floyd has made or lost by betting on sports. He routinely flaunts massive wagers placed on athletic events throughout the year.
Legal Tussles
Floyd was arrested in 2002 and charged with two charges of domestic abuse and one count of misdemeanour assault. For this offence, he received a six-month suspended sentence and community service. After being convicted of two charges of misdemeanour batter battery in 2004, he received a one-year suspended sentence. After kicking a bouncer, he pled not guilty to a misdemeanour batter charge in 2005. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended. Floyd was sentenced to 90 days in county prison in 2011 on assault charges.
He also had to do 100 hours of community service and enrol in a 12-month domestic violence programme. He was sentenced to 63 days in prison. Floyd petitioned for medical parole while serving his term, claiming that the 800-calorie daily prison meal menu was causing his muscles to atrophy away. He stated that his body required 3000-4000 calories per day. The judge refused to comply. Floyd was freed and was met by 50 Cent on a private plane with luggage containing $1 million in cash.
