President Akufo-Addo contributes GH¢1 million to Medeama's Champions League campaign

President Nana Akufo-Addo has offered GH1 million in support of Medeama SC’s CAF Champions League campaign in 2023/2024.

Ghana’s President made the comment during the club’s league trophy ceremony on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the Jubilee House.

George Mireku Duker, Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Tarkwa, led the delegation, which included chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, the club’s Board Chairman, Dr Tony Aubynn, Head Coach Evans Augustine Adotey, other management and technical team members and the players.

On Sunday, August 20, Medeama will meet Nigeria’s Remo Stars in the Champions League preliminary round at the Cape Coast Stadium.

The return leg is slated for August 27, a week later.

“I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign.

The deputy minister is insisting that if I’m in Ghana on the 20th, I should come to Cape Coast. I’ll see.

We’ll do our best.” said President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo also congratulated Medeama on their first league title.

The yellow and mauves won with 60 points, defeating Aduana Stars.

The victory ended the Western Region’s 47-year drought for a league title, which began with Sekondi Hasaacas’ victory in 1977.

“Congratulations to you, the captain, and the members of the team for this historic achievement.

It’s been 47 years since a team from the Western Region won the cup.

This is great.

You’ve done a great job. Congratulations,” expressed President Akufo-Addo.

Medeama will also play an international friendly against Major League Soccer team D.C. United on Saturday, October 14 at Audi Field in the United States.

The unique meeting of the two great teams will add to the celebration of African culture in Washington, D.C.

I understand that you have been invited to Washington in the month of October for Ghana Week, and you’ve been invited to play against Washington D. C. Football Club.

That’s going to be big. So, I wish you the best of luck for that,” shared the President, extending his well-wishes.

"The spectators threw urine and insulted me and the players. We needed to protect ourselves, so we raced to the pitch, but to be honest, I responded to them," he told Akoma FM. "As a 30-year lover of the game, I had never seen anything like this before. It was more like a fight than a football match."

Bashir Hayford, the head coach of the Hearts of Oak Lions, delayed his team’s game against Bechem United on Saturday by sitting in the centre of the pitch due to biassed officiating.

During the game at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Hayford took a seat in the centre of the pitch, forcing a 20-minute stoppage in play.

The legendary Ghanaian trainer’s actions were in protest of what was described as one-sided officiating.

Following a brief break, Hayford left the field, allowing the game to resume. Despite playing with one man down, Bechem averted a loss on the day.

The draw drops Lions into the relegation zone, three points below Bofoakwa Tano, who sits above it.
