Mohammed Kudus of Ajax was awarded Footballer of the Year at the 5th edition of the Ghana Football Awards on Sunday night at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Kudus beat out fellow Black Stars players Joseph Paintsil and Abdul Salis Samed to win the accolade following a successful season with Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam. Kudus was Ghana’s standout performer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as he scored twice in the team’s sole victory of the campaign, a 3-2 triumph over South Korea.
Evans Adotei of Medeama Sporting Club received the men’s coach of the year award for leading the squad to their maiden Ghanaian league title.
Medeama also took home a slew of additional honours on the night. Their Acting CEO and President, Moses Armah, was voted CEO of the Year, as was their male squad for winning the Ghanaian league, and their goalie, Felix Kyei, was named goalie of the Year.
The Ghana Football honours board bestowed the Living Legend honours to Sir Sam Jonah and Alberta Sackey.
Sir Sam Jonah received the Living Legend Award for his work as the chairman of Obuasi Goldfields (now Ashgold) in the 1990s, when they dominated Ghana’s football league.
Alberta Sackey, a former Black Queens captain, was honoured for her pioneering contribution to women’s football in Ghana.
She captained Ghana in its first senior FIFA World Cup debut in 1999 and again in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies were named female team of the year after winning the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League and the Women’s FA Cup.
Joe Nana Adarkwa, their coach, was voted women’s team coach of the year after leading the club to a league and FA Cup double.
Die Hard Supporters Union received the unique fan award for their unwavering support of the country’s national football teams on their different deployments.
In the 2022/23 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League, Princess Owusu of Fabulous Ladies was crowned Women’s Goal Queen. During the season, she scored 17 goals for her side.
Abednego Tetteh of Gold Stars won the men’s goal king title for his 18-goal tally in the 2022/23 Betpawa Ghana Premier League.
Eric Zeze of Asante Kotoko won the Betpawa Ghana Premier League goal of the year for his spectacular solo effort against Aduana Stars.
Asante Kotoko was named the Most Vibrant Social Media Club.
Robert Coleman, Chief Executive of Wembley Sports, received the Thumbs Up Award for his immense commitment to grassroots development in Ghana via the installation of over sixty astro turfs around the country.
Ernest Nuamah of FC Nordsjaelland has won the Odartey Lamptey Future Stars award for his outstanding season in the Danish Super League, in which he scored 16 goals.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies’ Mary Amponsah earned the female Home-based Player of the Season award for her outstanding contributions to the team’s triumph in the league and the women’s FA Cup.
Tamale City’s Sampson Eduku was named Home-based Player of the Season following an outstanding season in which he scored 14 goals and assisted three times in the 2022/2023 betPawa Premier League.
Victor Osimhen was awarded the Best African International title winner for his outstanding season with Napoli, in which he earned the top scorers title as well as the Scudetto.
The Blessing of AS Far Shine Agbomadzi was named 2023 Women’s Footballer of the Year for her performance.
Ghana’s departed heroes were also honoured for their significant contributions to the growth of football in Ghana throughout the years.
